|Oil on canvas, possibly Fall River School or Providence, R.I., signed lower right O.R. 1884, in period gold leaf frame that may be original to the painting. The painting is in very good, apparently untouched condition, while the frame is unrestored and shows attractive wear consistent with its age. Canvas size, 12-1/4'x 10-1/4"; Framed size, 15-1/4"x 13-1/4". The style is typical of mid 19th century American still life painting which continued throughout the 19th century and into the early part of the 20th century. Many of the artists who painted in the style were young when they began in the mid 19th century and they often continued in the style into their later years. This school of painting was conservative and ignored the influences of Impressionism. If it had been undated this particular painting might be considered an earlier work. It is an extremely well executed example of the genre and the absence of a known signature does not detract from its aesthetic appeal.
