Featuring an intricately carved 19th century Japanese netsuke of a man waking up, or in agony, not sure which. Is he yawning, or in pain? With his feet in the air, his hand to his head, he is lying by a bundle of firewood, a gourd, and is wearing a pipe case and pouch, inlaid as are eyes. The teeth are amazing, as is all detail. A very unusual Chinese carving of a mystery ball, which are balls carved within balls. This was so difficult to carve and took much skill. The chain at the top appears to have been carved out of one piece. It is connected to a ring on the hat of the figure, perhaps a Chinese diety holding a lotus stem around her neck and a lotus leaf on her head. She has been connected to the balls.
