Featuring beautiful antique Japanese black lacquer box with fine gold lacquer fern-like leaves and branches. The design caries over to 3 sides. Inner tray with large lily pad leaf design and matching similar design on interior of cover. Featuring an unusual and well carved tiny netsuke of Kinko riding a carp, the subject taken from a legend in Japan. In the book, Legends of Japanese Art, there is an interesting paragraph written about this subject. This netsuke is very well carved, the feet and hand details being quite precise, plus every detail is excellent. The surface of the carp is textured and his eyes are inlaid with baylene. Wonderful presentation heron/crane kogo with mon engraved on side of bird. Japanese hallmarks and Japanese characters for sterling silver on underside. There may be a gold wash on the beak and the top of the head, and part of the top of the kogo has a mat finish. This piece is in excellent condition and probably dates to the first quarter of the 20th century but could be a little latter. It measures 2 3/4" long x 1 1/2" deep x 1 1/2" high.
