James Dexter Havens(1900-1960) is one of the best known graphic artists of America and won national recognition. He had an infinite capacity for taking pains which is a well known definition of genius. His keen artistic sense, his love of nature and the whimsical humor which is one of his distinguishing characteristics, brought him well deserved success. He had commissions to create the membership print for the Prairie Print Makers, the Woodcut Society of New York and the American Color Print Society. He was an associate member of the National Academy. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan, the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum, and many others. There are many entries on the Internet about this great artist and his works. This charming print, entitled "Bombus on Acacia" is dated 1938. Several woodblocks were used to make this print. The subject matter is superb and the detail is truly amazing, a favorite. This print is very hard to come by as only 35 were made. It is signed 17/35 - Bombus on Auchusa- James Do. Havens- sec/imp-1938-. The frame is gold with a raised design of leaves and grapes. With the frame, the dimensions are just under 11.5" x 9 3/4" square. The print itself measures 6 1/4" square but may extend under the mat. The color is excellent and has not faded and the print is in excellent condition. It has been framed with an archival mat and backing. The truest color is the first photo. The other photos appear to be lighter due to the lighting/photo.
