Did you know that in Chinese astrology 2013 is the year of snake? The image of the snake has been used since the beginning of time to represent and symbolize a variety of meanings. For Native Americans it was the life form given to lightning and rainbows; for the ancient Hebrews it was a symbol of healing as well as a representation of both good and bad fortune; by Christians, it was revered as the symbol of God. In more recent history, after Price Alfred gave Queen Victoria a snake ring for their engagement, it popularly became the symbol for fidelity, eternity and endless love. This Victorian 18kt yellow gold ring is an example of the timelessness of much Victorian jewelry; modern and simple from a distance it has the appearance of a wide gold band. Look closer and you see the diamond (.20pt) accented head of the serpent wrapped around the tail representing the eternal circle.

The Victorian women loved their long chains and often wore a few at the same time. The next time you are visiting a museum, take a look at the jewelry in some of the paintings and you will notice the chains as well as other pieces which may begin to look familiar. I love to find the similarities in pieces I own and ones I see in books and paintings!

This 14kt link chain is unusual not only for the length (28 inches) but also for the the lovely and delicate double infinity link element. However, you don't have to worry that this is too delicate to wear; after all it has withstood at least 100 years! There is no clasp but it is long enough to triple - so in essence you'll have 2 necklaces in one. A wonderful classic piece for your collection to wear alone, with other chains or to hang a pendant or locket. Needless to say, I love this chain for its versatility as well as the design.

Condition: Excellent

Measurements: 28" long; each link is 5/8" long by 1/4" wide

Gross Weight: 18.3 dwt; 28.6 grams Circa: 1900; American

The Buccellati family first began working in the jewelry trade in Italy in the mid-eighteen century. In 1919 Mario Buccellati took over an existing firm and renamed it 'Buccellati' and their fame grew quickly. In the following years, he gained a loyal following at home at abroad and was dubbed "The Prince of Goldsmiths". Buccellati became the first Italian jeweler with a location on Fifth Avenue, New York City in 1951. Every bit of the surface of a Buccellati piece is worked and finished, often then resembling a fine piece of fabric. According to the firm, their target is a "contemporary woman with class, who likes to live with style and wear jewels on every occasion with self-assurance." In 2000, special Buccellati objects and jewels were gathered for an exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum to celebrate the firm's art and creativity.

This brooch is designed as a textured squirrel with a circular-cut ruby eye and fluffy tail, climbing up a realistically textured sterling branch. Absolutely the most amazing workmanship in the detail of this piece. Signed: Buccellati

Lalaounis jewelry! The name alone conjures up the beauty of the Greek islands, deep golds highlighted by the sun and an incredibly rich history. This bracelet is one of the earlier designs from the eponymous designer's collection; the ram's head nearly his signature piece, and variations of which are housed in the Lalounis Jewelry Museum in Athens. Ilias Lalaounis has received numerous awards and prizes for his artistic talents; the most important being the only jeweler who has ever been elected as a member to the French Academy of Fine Arts (1990).

"Holbeinesque" jewelry was one of the early manifestations of the 1870s Renaissance revival style, characterized by a large oval gemstone mounted in gold and enameled with the ubiquitous quatrefoil motif. This magnificent pendant is a supreme example. The central oval garnet cabochon is surrounded by this quatrefoil design in red, green and blue champlevé enamel on 18kt gold interspersed with six square set chrysoberyl jewels. A beautifully enameled bale sits atop the pendant and an additional enamel fitting secures a diamond shaped drop of 4 square cut chrysoberyls accented with a trefoil design of three golden orbs.

The reverse is almost as stunning with its elaborately hand engraved scroll and floral design surrounding an oval glass hair locket compartment.

Sentimental jewelry was quite popular in the Victorian era when overt expression of emotions was highly checked. Often these items contained hearts and flowers, frequently together. Gifts of this kind were one way to express one's sentiment to a loved one, be it friend or family. These tiny heart earrings in rose gold are just one example. Today these would make the same impression; one of love and affection for the recipient.
