India has the longest continuous legacy history of jewelry making. The Mughal reign (1526-1858) was the most significant period of time in relation to jewelry with many jewelers prospering due to jewel12ry's great status with India's royalty; it was so powerful that they established laws, limiting wearing of jewelry to royalty. Today the jewelry of India is still created using many of the same techniques as well as high karat gold jewelry of 22kt and 24kt. The choice of using high karat gold is due to its malleability which allows for very intricate and beautiful designs as in this lovely 22kt yellow gold and ruby fringe necklace which contains cabochon ruby accents completed by braided chain. The swirl design is reminiscent of the paisley, a popular Indian motif borrowed from textile patterns and block prints. The symbolic meaning of the paisley is taken from its shape, likened to a mango, the sweetest of fruits and thus representing "auspiciousness and the fulfillment of 'legitimate' worldly desires." Wear this beauty for ensured contentment!

When Price Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria went into an intense period of mourning for her beloved husband; she was devastated writing "How I, who leant on him for all and everything—without whom I did nothing, moved not a finger, arranged not a print or photograph, didn't put on a gown or bonnet if he didn't approve it shall go on, to live, to move, to help myself in difficult moments?"

The Queen turned mourning into her chief concern and mourned for the next 40 years wearing black in her seclusion as well as on the rare instances she did make a public appearance. The world followed suit - jet, ebony and onyx set the tone in jewelry with the occasional addition of pearls and diamonds.

These black onyx kite-shaped earrings are most likely American and show that Queen Victoria had a worldwide following. Set in 14kt yellow gold with the original screw backs ensuring a secure fit, they are topped with a traditional trefoil design with a lovely scroll pattern below.

For centuries spinel was mistaken for ruby and gained undeserved fame. Some famous large rubies, such as the "Black Prince's Ruby" and the "Timur Ruby" in the British Crown Jewels are actually spinels. Today fine red spinel is more rare than ruby but less valuable.

These sweet faceted red spinel earrings are perfect for the holidays with the bright red centering a cluster of tiny pearls. The pearls add a brightness to any complexion and the facets on the spinel add the sparkle. Having said that, they will also look wonderful with the more casual attire of jeans and a tee shirt or even for a yoga workout.

Simple and infinitely wearable, these are suitable for any age.

The buckle motif has been used in jewelry since the Victorian Era and had a huge resurgence in the 1920s through the 1940s. Van Cleef & Arpels was the first to design the buckle bracelet in 1935; all of the top jewelers soon followed including Tiffany & Co and Cartier.

This particular bracelet is a true classic yet with unusual styling. Though unsigned, it appears to have been manufactured by the jewelers who worked for both Tiffany & Cartier as they both sold this exact bracelet. Composed of 14kt yellow gold, platinum, diamonds and rubies, one striking difference in this from many other buckle bracelets is the wonderfully flexible textured strap, giving this a 3 dimensional, machine age look to it. The underside however, is as soft as silk on the wrist. The substantial clasp is indeed a marvel as well adjusting to fit any wrist with its largest size extending to 7.25 inches by means of a very finely made lock within the clasp itself.

The symbol of the heart representing love developed in the 15th century. The geometric shape itself is found in much earlier sources, but in such instances does not depict a "heart", but typically foliage, typically the leaves of ivy, fig and water-lily.

This particular contemporary heart encompasses both of these iconographic elements of love; the shape of the heart and the foliate design within. In addition, it holds seven (7) gems of garnet; seven representing completeness, clear conscience and connection between body and soul. All of this on a simple and unusual gold 18" chain.

It was not uncommon to find 19th century antique wedding rings made in a delicate design using turquoise, which symbolized the forget-me-not flower. This charming and delicate Victorian beauty was most likely just that. Six (6) cabouchon turquoise surrounding a faceted garnet and lovely scroll work on the shoulders. The underside contains a compartment that at one time was used to keep a tiny lock of hair from the one who gave this. The mystery of its earlier life brings magic to this ring and helps to keep it alive in the world of its next owner. As an engagement ring, an everyday ring or a wonderful gift to a loved one, this ring will continue its life for many years to come.

A wonderful pastel green spinel ring set in a 14kt yellow gold mount. Perfect for the summer with its pale color and green tone, green being the 2013 Pantone color of the year. Faceted for just enough bling but softly hued to make this wearable everyday. The mounting is made in a random nest like pattern making me think of an egg sitting in a nest of gold. Held in place by six (6) prongs and a simple gold band.

NOTE: SYNTHETIC GEMSTONES:

Synthetic gemstones are often confused with simulants or imitations. Synthetics however, while also man-made, have been scientifically developed to duplicate a natural gem and will have the same physical and chemical properties. It takes a very experienced eye to tell them apart when they are well made. Gem quality synthetics make owning beautiful jewelry affordable as rubies, diamonds, sapphires and emeralds all have their synthetic counterparts and only your gemologist knows for sure. Often used as accent stones in jewels of the 1920s.

NOTE: SPINELS:

The most famous spinels are found in the British Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels of Iran in Teheran. Throughout history, spinel, most commonly thought of as red, has been confused with ruby partly because they are both found in the deposits. Spinel, more common than the many gemstones is a great substitute for it appears in a variety of colors.
