Early on, opals were believed to possess magical qualities and were thought to increase one's prophecy and spontaneity. Napoleon adored the stone and had them set in the Crown jewels of France. Queen Victoria also loved the opal and proved this by collecting and wearing opals throughout her reign. Demantoid garnets were first discovered in the Ural mountains in 1853 and quickly became popular for use in Edwardian jewelry. Demantoids are one of the highest priced gemstones and often rivals emerald. This sumptuous ring centers a creamy opal with lots of flashes of green and pink and orange; a few scratches not visible to the naked eye and likely to benefit from a polish. The inner surround is made up of 24 bright green circular-cut demantoid garnets (a few abraided, visible with a loupe) complimented beautifully by 22 old mine cut diamonds with great brilliance (approximately 0.06 ct each), totalling approximately 1.32 carats. Set in a 14kt gold mount. Size 6 3/4 and can be easily resized. Condition is very good. Circa 1910
