Size: O-tanzaku. Approximately 14.5 x 7.5 inches.
Date: ca. 1900s-23.
Bears Koson signature and seal.
Reference: K4.5 and plate 106 in Crows, Cranes and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson (Reigle Newland).
Condition: Excellent. Pencil number on back.
Provenance: The Bedford, NY estate of Eleanor Jay and Arthur Iselin. Eleanor Jay was a descendant of United States founding father, John Jay. Their Bedford home is now the John Jay Homestead historic site.
Note: The prints in this Eleanor Jay collection are all pre-earthquake. This example of Cranes differs from others you may find. It is sealed as well as signed. The wood grain in the background is exquisite. The birds are beautifully embossed. The design closely follows the plate in the authoritative reference and appears to exceed that example in quality.
