An Exceptional pair of Directoire patinated bronze and Ormolu or gilt
bronze candlesticks in the Egyptian manner. Although very Empire and Neoclassical this item is from the Directiore period from the 18th century the period just before the First French Empire period began. French Circa: 1795-1800.
Measuring: 12" high. Very Empire in feeling with the Egyptian Female classical draped female maidens. This is the earliest of this type of object and first quality. The English Also did some bronze work in the Regency period which is very similar to this which these could be and is a possibility. If this pair are English they are quite rare as the English produced much smaller amounts of bronze item than the French. They did have a few master bronze smiths such as Mathew Boulton. The bases are made of Rouge Royal marble. The gilding is mercury gilded and all original and in tact. The overall condition is quite exceptional with only some minor losses to the edges of the marble which seem to have been this way for about a century as they are soft and worn to the touch and show patina. This pair is a superb example of neoclassical objects. |
