Martha Washington States Porcelain Plate by Haviland

Scarce, 8.5" (21.59 cm) Porcelain Plate from the 1969 production by Haviland, France, of the original "Martha Washington" dinner service which was presented to her by a representative of the Dutch East India Company, in the 18th Century, a gift to the United States' very first, First Lady.

The plate is faithfully reproduced with the 15-point, brilliant gold star, each point representing one of the unified states around the perimeter, with Martha's monogram in a round, center cartouche. A red banner, below, displays the Latin phrase, "Decus et Tutamen Ab Illo," referring to the protection of many by and as one. Each of the state names is centered within a green oval, all connected by gilded chain links. The chain is then enclosed by a diamond-gilded snake, holding his own tail in his mouth, further representation of the bond and protection of the states. Note that New Jersey was then, "Jersey." One last round of gilding rims the plate.

The reverse is marked, "Haviland, Limoges, Martha Washington," in gold overglaze, and "Haviland, France," in green underglaze. A rarely available, special plate, in excellent condition. c. 1969. $14 US Shipping.
