The piece may be displayed on the wall, if preferred. The charming miniature painting, with some losses and craquelure, is of a young boy "sailing" in a lily pad flower. In his right hand, he holds a pole with a pink banner flying from the top, and beneath that, the remains of a white "sail," strewn with a garland of pink roses and leaves; in his left hand is a bouquet of tiny blue flowers and green leaves. The sailboat flower rides on green lily pads upon the water, with other reeds and grasses in the background, and a flower bud in the foreground. The newer, outer frame is of lavishly embossed and gilded black leather, with a circa date of 1940s. Approximate age of the miniature and leather book cover, is 1870-1890. Slight wear to the vintage frame.

The miniature measures about 3" x 1-3/4", the diary cover about 5-1/4" x 3-7/8", the outer frame about 10" x 8" x 1". A rare and unique item for the collector.
