Original page 287 and 288 (on verso), from the Rare and very important 18th Century Volume II of LE ANTICHITA DI ERCOLANO ESPOSTE, (The Antiquities discovered in Herculaneum -- Pompei); published 1760, on laid paper, measuring about 18.50" x 13.25", in the original Italian language. Plate marks can be readily seen and felt. The set was published in 8 volumes, with a 9th volume being the catalog (1757-1792); large pages were printed in full size from copperplate engravings. The capitol letter "D" (two dolphin in water) on page 287, was designed by Luigi Vanvitelli and engraved by Carlo Nolli, and is but one of 540 other letters designed by this artist. Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte was the most important archaeological work of the eighteenth century, and contributed to the development of European culture in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The volumes were the first works produced by the Accademia Ercolanese (Herculaneum Academy), which was founded on the thirteenth of December 1755 on the orders of the king Carlo (who later became Carlo III of Spain). The original set has a very interesting history. We summarize that history within this description, although complete documentation and history of the original set may be found online. Condition includes a tear upper right corner, yellowing, creases and bends, a few water spots, and what appears to be an oil spot in the center. Capable of full restoration by a professional if desired. $16 US Shipping. |
