Simply beautiful, twelve (12) individual, two-page wide, BIRD SPECIES in their NATURAL HABITAT, in watercolor, gouache and ink, within a silk-covered JAPANESE ACCORDION BOOK, of double paper, artist signature by red ink chop (the same on all 12) on each painting, description or story in calligraphy for each painting, original seller's note in pencil on one endpaper corner with original price in calligraphy and English ("50-"); calligraphy title on book's front, left-set tab. Comes within its own silk case, lined in silk damask; the damask is in a bird pattern; two carved bone closures on the box. Box measures about 5" x 7" x 1-1/8"; book is 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" x 3/4"; each double-page painting is 8-3/4" x 6-3/8". The basic technique of the paintings is generally called "Sumi-E," although it appears (to the happy embellishment of the paintings) that there might be more detail in some of the paintings than sumi-e has, generally. The plant habitat species for each painting is as lovely as the bird, without one overpowering the other. It is apparent that the artist was quite skilled, both in execution of image, and sparcity of ink & color, knowing exactly how much ink and water to have in his (or her) brush to accomplish the desired effect. Condition of both the book and presentation box is excellent. We suggest this is 20th Century, and place it in the first half of the century, although we do not guarantee age as accurate. $14 US Shipping. |
