It is well noted that the shape of this vase was created in the 1940s by David Hillman, and has been a popular Steuben item ever since. Measuring about 8" tall, 1-3/8" base diameter; "teardrop" bubble skillfully blown in the lower center, etched center front with the beginning phrase from Elizabeth Barrett Browning's (1806-1861) enduring Poem of the same name. . . "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways."** Signed on the base in the familiar hand-engraved script, "Steuben." Excellent condition with only minimal wear to the base. FREE U.S. SHIPPING. [we have another Steuben bud vase listed also -- etched with a phrase from a poem by Robert Browning, Elizabeth's husband] **Here is Elizabeth's poem in whole (poem no. 43 from her published book, "Sonnets From The Portuguese" .... "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. I love thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. I love thee with a passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death." |
