Josef Lenhardt Enameled Cluck Cluck Decanter Antique

SIZE: About 8-3/4" tall, 3-3/4" square, 1-3/4" rim diameter.

DESCRIPTION: Clear blown glass "cinched" DECANTER (called a cluck-cluck or kuttrolf) decorated by the Austrian master enameler, JOSEF LENHARDT, who was a major contributor to enameled works of this type for Lobmyer, and later under his own name. Without knowing Lenhardt's dates of employment, we cannot say whether the glass is Lobmyer or from Lenhardt's own company; probably Lobmyer, but not guaranteed.

The translucent grey-to-black enamel is on all sides, at both the shoulders and below the waist, on the shoulder corners, and the top of the stopper. The scene is a lone gentleman in 18th century attire on his own hunting expedition in the woods, with his hunting dog companion and helper; both are in pursuit of an antlered deer which appears on one side in full running position. Several scenes of the country are depicted in these hand-enameled pictures. We have not provided all of them, but enough that one is able to determine the considerable, extolled skill of the enameler.

No signatures, although the hand-painted numeral "2." appears both on the base of the stopper and centered within the polished pontil mark of the base, in black enamel. This piece was created between 1880 and 1915.

CONDITION: Very good, with normal wear from age and use, very minor wear or losses to the enameling, minor mineral deposits, and a typical slight "misshape" to the body which appears more as a diamond than a square. The cluck-cluck, or kuttrolf was often severely and intentionally misshapen; several interesting examples may be seen through search engine images. $18 US Shipping.
