Small Oil Painting on Board, by Francois Maurice Reynaud (1825-1909) France, Young Woman in Garden with Dogs. Image is 6-3/4" x 4", period interior frame is about 14" x 13" x 2-1/2", outer frame is about 18-1/4" x 15" x 3-1/2". Signed lower right, "F. Reynaud." Verso label reads: "Reynaud (Francois), Paris, Medals Paris, 1867 and 1889, Exposition Universelle. Member of the Society of French Artists. Hors Concours."
The framing on this piece has value equal to, if not exceeding the value of the painting, itself. The original gold-leaf frame, accented with brilliant gilt, is in the Rococo style, and is actually a "double frame," in that the smaller border slopes outward on the sides to display the larger, repeat border design of openwork acanthus leaves and tiny floral vines.
The double gold frame rests inside a larger wood "shadow box" which is lined in burgundy velvet, and has burled wood veneer, and a glass front. All four corners of this wood "box" are of dove-tail construction.
The lovely painting is of a young girl on a garden bench against a wall, who is hand-spinning yarn onto a drop spindle, from the fibers on a distaff to her left; a mother dog and her two young offspring observe with interest. Her clothing indicates that she may be a servant of the house.
The quality of both the painting and the framing are superb to say the least.
Condition of the painting is excellent with "very good" describing all framing -- both frames have normal, expected wear, and non-threatening age cracks.
Origin is Paris, France; circa 1865-1870. $75 US Shipping.
