This Japanese red lacquered wooden serving platter or tray is 13 inches in diameter. It is carved as a bream, which is the Japanese fish symbol for the "bounty of the sea". There are several layers of different colors of red lacquer which heighten the fluid appearence of the fish. The surface is slightly dulled with use and age, the charger is in wonderful condition.

Clearly made by an adoring grandmother, this antique Dong Minority hat is covered with a variety of ornate embroidery stitches including both wrapped thread and couching techniques. The hat is topped with silver half beads representing bubbles and a large top knot.. It is a bid dirty which would be expected in a childs hat of this age and use.

This antique Korean ink stone was carved from a thick piece of black stone, and is 7.25 inches (18 cm) x 11 inches (28cm) x 3 inches (7.6 cm) high. It weights about 14 lbs. The lid is deeply carved with a swirling dragon. The base of the stone has a grinding surface that slopes to a deep inkwell for collecting the liquid ink. The border of the base is carved with a simple repeat decoration.

One corner of the lid has a chip with most of the loss on the underside...

Although similar types of containers would have used by both traditional Han Chinese and ethnic minority Chinese, this particular container is definately traditional Han Chinese. This pair of antique Miao boots were made by a young woman from Song Tao to be worn for festivals. The thick sole has iron hob nails to make walking easier on the hills and terraces. The vamp is made from cotton fabric and is heavily embroidered with cottton thread using satin and chain stitch techniques. The upper part of the boot is also made of cotton fabric.
