The Japonais style was quite the rage during the 1870s when Americans bought items with oriential motifs and styles such as posessed by this vase signed Baccarat. The green mottled ground provides an excellent backdrop for the hand painted love birds perched on a flowering branch in front of the silvery moon. A circular oriental or tropical vignette is positioned below. Excellent condition. 8" high. Though signed Baccarat we have strong reason to believe that it is by the Smith Brothers who left the legendary Mt. Washington glass company in 1878 to form their own glass works. As such we would date the vase to c. 1880. On the other hand it may have been produced while at Mt. Washington in which case we would back up the date to 1875. In either case it is a gorgeous collectible antque of true beauty. Import some French elegance into your home today. We have received many compliments for this vase - why not make it yours? |
