An outstanding and rare basalt intaglio seal featuring a widow and Roman soldier - a theme quite popular in the late 18th C. when this seal was made. It is encased in a copper holder with a fob for suspending from a necklace or chatelaine. The back is marked Wedgwood & Bentley 33 indicating a production date c. 1775 - just in time for the American War for Independence. 33 is the model number.
Condition is excellent with little evidence of use. However there is some slight disfiguration of the back side of the seal for which we could supply photographs. As a collector note we should inform our readers that the Wedgwood & Bentley mark is quite rare giving you another good reason to purchase this great find. Approximately 1" x 15/16" on the surface. The gorgeous copper patina and black basalt make this rare seal a rare treasure. |
