LARGE AESTHETIC TURQUOISE TILE OF WATERBIRDS IN THE GRASSES, made by Maw & Co., c. 1900
This large tile is in a gorgeous monochromatic turquoise color. The tile is molded in relief which intensifies the turquoise in those areas where the glaze has pooled. It is the English tradition of deep respect for nature and the two waterbirds are meticulously designed. The birds stand in the water grasses, seemingly alert to possible danger. This may have been part of a series on a hunting theme.
The tile is eight inches square. The back of the tile has a low relief grid of squares, and approximately at mid level, the name, MAW & CO., appears. The tile appears to have been made around 1890. The condition is very very good except for a shallow loss, ¾”, which can only been seen on the back. The tiny white patches on the tile are due to camera reflection. The brilliant turquoise glaze is in excellent condition, but is darker in the lower left hand corner, due to pooling of excess glaze. It is very similar to the Minton hunting series but the MAW glaze has a deeper blue turquoise than the Minton aqua coloring.
