Minton Porcelain Plate with Pierced Edge and Painted Butterflies, from the Naturalist series designed by W. S. Coleman MINTON porcelain plate with a pierced edge, from the "Naturalist" service designed by William S. Coleman, c. 1870. The plate has a black transfer print with a scattering of brightly hand painted butterflies. The marks include Minton plus the specific Coleman inscription for the Naturalist series, as well as a lozenge which dates it as 1870. The plate measures 9” in diameter. Condition is very good, save a small shallow chip at the edge approx. 10 o’clock on the first image. It is rare to find a pierced plate in this pattern.4
