HUGE JAPANESQUE AESTHETIC MOVEMENT PLATTER in the KIOTO pattern by Brownhills
Brownhill Pottery & Co. was the maker of this huge platter in the KIOTO pattern, c. late 1870s. The composition is quite graphic, with three vertical sections, with a lateral subdivision with various geometric patterns and Japanese emblems. This wonderful 19.5” brown aesthetic platter epitomizes the Japanese influences during the Aesthetic Movement period. The background is a landscape with large winged flying birds, probably cranes. It is topped with a large vertical band, with a wading bird on lily pads, and patterned sections at the top and bottom of the plate. It creates a combination of movement with flying birds, and the calm of the wading bird. In this huge format it becomes a spectacular graphic image, creating a work of art for a dining or living room wall or serving at a table. Terrific for Thanksgiving or other holiday celebrations!
