AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE BOTANICAL PASSION FLOWER TILE ON CRACKED ICE BACKGROUND. The tile design is a transfer in a dark navy, almost black,on a cream clay. The asymmetrica; design on the cracked ice background is very Japanesque. The dar round circles are hard to to interpret, and may represent drops of water. The tile is 6" square and in excellent condition. This is one of several passion flower tiles in the collection. The religious (Christian) symbolism of the parts of the flower were important in the late 19th Century. (I have an article on the subject, if you would like a copy.) It is a striking Victorian. Aesthetic Movement design. Markings on the back: MINTON'S CHINA WORKS, STOKE ON TRENT, as well as an impressed globe. Circa 1875-1880.
