MINTON NATURALIST PLATE, Pierre Mallet, 1878, Duckling Watching Crayfish (or Lobster) for his next meal. Minton produced a series depicting ducklings at play in the yard or foraging for food. This plate has a black transfer on a celadon green clay background, enhanced with hand painting in yellow on the duckling and brown on the lobster. The plate is 10.25” in diameter and is in very good condition. There is tiny chip in the bowl of the plate, hidden among grasses, and rubbing of the glaze on the underside of the plate. The designs are very realistic, and yet, they drawings also convey the personality of the birds, with their energy and ingenuity in scavenging for food. The designer is Pierre Mallet, who also did similar bird designs for Wedgwood and Brownfield. See other listings which show more ducklings, as well as chickens. Pierre Mallet portrays the ducklings as being a little more vicious than the chickens. The impressed marks include MINTON as well as a small printed globe, a small triangle with a circle in it (indicating 1878 as date of manufacture), possibly a BB, and a Red ink C1854, which may indicate a pattern number. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks etc.
