AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE MAJOLICA PLATE BY CHOISY-LE-ROI

FRENCH AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE MAJOLICA PLATES BY CHOISY-LE-ROI, c. 1870s. Here is a series of plates with exceptional Aesthetic Movement designs from the company of Hautin & Boulanger of Choisy-le-Roi. The plates reveal strong Japanesque/Oriental influences. There are 12 designs in the series but it is hard to find all of them. The series were designed in the Japanese taste, with reference to the studies of the Japanese master, Hokusai, known as the Manga. The plates use the Email Ombrant technique. The molded plates provide deep recesses where the glaze may gather, with the end result being that the monochrome glaze appears both light and dark, depending on the depth of the glaze, hence the French term, ombre, which means shade or shadow. The moulded plates have a pleasant warm gold glaze on the front, with the typical Choisy aqua glaze on the back of the plates. The plates are priced $115 each. Discounts will be offered for multiple purchases. I have more detailed photos for each plate, which are available upon request. A. SEATED GIRL WITH SWALLOWS. Very light crazing. B. THE MAN WEARS A BROAD BRIMMED HAT TO PROTECT HIMSELF FROM THE SUN. He seems to have suddenly turned to the side, as if surprised by a person or movement in the field. Excellent condition. Medium crazing. C. MAN STROLLING, SHADED BY A LARGE UMBRELLA. This plate has some darkened crazing. D. YOUNG SEATED SERVANT GIRL LOOKING UP AT A STORK FLYING IN FRONT OF THE MOON, with a baton in its beak. Some crazing. E. YOUNG GIRL LOOKING UPWARDS AT THE SKY, waving, but we don't know why. Light crazing. F. A YOUNG GIRL SITTING ON THE CUSP OF THE QUARTER MOON with a rope which is attached to the man below. He is possibly pulling the moon along with the girl. Excellent condition. G.
