| GORGEOUS AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE TRANSFERWARE DINNER PLATE, 10.5” W. HAND PAINTED BLUE, PINKS, GREENS WITH SILVER LUSTRE. The KIOTO pattern by Bates, Gildea & Walker, was first registered in 1880. This is a wonderful example of English Victorian Aesthetic transferware, with strong Oriental influences. The plate is in excellent condition. The transfer is black on a white ground and has silver luster and motifs hand painted in blue, green and pinks. The border is decorated with flying and standing cranes, stylized and natural cherry blossoms, cattails and geometric patterns. The inner basketweave rim has a pale orange luster. The bright pink is almost a fuchsia color. The center medallion shows a bird sitting on a branch, above a geometric wall. The rim of the inset is bordered by a repeat of the 2 colors, and that again is bordered by a ring of fuchsia pink blossoms. The marks on the back include KIOTO, BG&W (for Bates Gildea & Walker), and Late Meyers plus impressed marks, IVORY, GILDEA & WALKER AND 10/92. There is also a printed English diamond registry mark. It is a most beautiful example of late Victorian lusterware. | ||
