| AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE TRANSFERWARE DINNER PLATE, 10.5”, With HAND PAINTED, MOSTLY BURGUNDY W. BLUE and PALE ORANGE LUSTRE. The KIOTO pattern by Bates, Gildea & Walker, was first registered in 1880. This is a wonderful example of English Victorian Aesthetic transferware, with strong Oriental influences. The border is decorated with flying and standing cranes, stylized and natural cherry blossoms, cattails and geometric patterns, the last of which is highlighted in a teal blue color. The inner rim is almost a basketweave pattern, in a rich, fuchsia color. The center medallion shows a bird sitting on a branch, above a geometric wall. The rim of the inset is bordered by a repeat of the 2 colors, and that again is bordered by a ring of cherry blossoms. The inner basket weave border has a light luster finish. Condition is very good. Some minor enamel loss on edge. Plate ia painted in red, pink, teal blue and yellows which retain the original depth of color. Markings on back include KIOTO, with trade mark potter in a circle, with 1780, B. G. & W., late Mayers. Also has a triangle with number 24, 5 and letters Rd., . K. as well as impressed marks Gildea & Walker, Ivory with numbers 10/84. No chips or cracks. Some minor age staining and minor crazing. | ||
