HUGE ETRUSCAN VASES BOWL BY MAYER & ELLIOT

HUGE ETRUSCAN VASES BOWL BY MAYER & ELLIOT (a precursor of Bates , Gildea and Walker) This spectacular 15” bowl has a black transferware print with decoration in terracotta rust red. The shape of bowl edge is lobed with five shallow curves, which adds to the strong design. There is a central motif with Etruscan Vases with various sizes and shapes. The inside border is approx. 2 inches, of overlapping circles and tiny floral motifs, interspersed with cartouches of Italianate foliate design that were probably inspired by Christopher Dresser. The condition is excellent, apart from a small chip on the underside of the short rimmed base. Markings in black include ETRUSCAN VASES and M&E, for Mayer and Elliott, c. 1858-1861 (Gildea and Walker was a later version of this company, due to a succession of mergers and takeovers and also made this pattern) This bowl is very rare as the company only manufactured the design for three years.
