WEDGWOOD GREEK MUSICIANS SERIES of Plates c.1880s

WEDGWOOD CLASSICAL GREEK MUSICIAN’S SERIES of Plates designed by Thomas Allen, c. 1880 Here is a beautiful and rare set of the Greek Musicians series. One of the series appears on P.97 of Maureen Batkin’s book, Wedgwood Ceramics 1846-1959. These images were initially designed as tiles, and later adapted to plate designs, with the addition of a Classical leaf border. The plates are polychrome with brilliant colors. Condition is excellent, without chips, cracks or hairlines. (A) A young woman in a citrus grove, playing a flute while a young man in a toga listens intently. The brilliant colors include purple and mauve garments, as well green, red and yellows. Markings include impressed WEDGWOOD, as well as printed marks WEDGWOOD, ETRURIA, ENGLAND, plus an A, 3XO over I. (B) A young woman wearing a purple gown, in a citrus grove, dancing while playing a tambourine. The brilliant colors include purple garments, as well green, red and yellows. Markings include impressed WEDGWOOD and 5OPl as printed marks WEDGWOOD, ETRURIA, ENGLAND, plus a K. (C) A young woman wearing a cerise tunic and mauve skirt, in a citrus grove, playing a zither or a lute. The brilliant colors include cerise and mauve garments, as well green, red and yellows. Markings include impressed WEDGWOOD, as well as printed marks WEDGWOOD, ETRURIA, ENGLAND, plus green inked A4686. (D) In the citrus grove, a young bare-chested man wearing a wrap and playing the pan flute, while a woman with a burgundy tunic and gauzy skirt dances. The brilliant colors include wine colored garments, as well green, red and yellows. Markings include impressed WEDGWOOD, as well as printed marks WEDGWOOD, ETRURIA, ENGLAND and K over 11, plus a black inked K, red inked A4694
