AESTHETIC JAPANESQUE BROWN TRANSFER W. BIRDS & RIBBON
This beautiful Aesthetic Movement plate was made by Doulton & Co. in the 1880s. The pattern name is NIPON, appearing on some plates, but frequently the pattern name does not appear. The design was introduced by Pinder & Bourne, before they were taken over by Doulton. The plate has Japanese style decorations. The central motif is two birds, possibly wild turkeys, at the water's edge. The plate is also decorated with floral and geometric patterned panels, resembling a ribbon. This plate measures approx. 10" Diameter. Markings on the bottom include 4 88, which is probably the month and year of manufacture, a brown diamond registration mark, and an impressed Doulton “rosette” mark. The condition is Excellent. I have a number of plates and platters in this pattern, which come in various colors and combinations: cranberry; black transfer with pinks, greens, blues; a cobalt version with gilding and touches of red enameling, etc. Please Email me at Eudora@nyc.rr.com if you would like more details about this Doulton collection.
