Large Aesthetic Polychrome INDUS Fruit Bowl, 1885. This had to find INDUS Fruit Bowl or Serving Bowl, measures 4-1/8" tall and 11-5/8" across the handles. The INDUS pattern was first introduced by Ridgway in 1877. The design is an exotic Oriental scene with birds and bamboo, as well as distant pagodas - all showing Chinese and Japanese influences. The multi-motif pattern varies between different pieces of the service. It has a floral border with birds. The pattern shows lush tropical foliage, hummingbirds, a crane, trumpet vines, and bamboo, and a pond scene with water lilies, arrowheads, ferns, irises, etc., These elements of nature give it a very Oriental appearance, which was popular in Victorian England. Polychrome transfer with bird designs throughout; no evidence or wear or ever having a lid. Excellent condition. No chips or dings, or cracks, and best of all, no staining or crazing. A scarce large serving piece in a desirable pattern.
