This unusual pottery bowl in an elongated triangular form and is well painted with a colorful enamel abstract design in a vivid red-orange and yellow on a beige crackled ground. There are three holes where the woven basket handle loops through at each end. Around the sides is an alternating circular design, and on the widest portion is the artist’s signature. Watanabe considered an expert in kappazuri stencil printing had converted to Christianity in 1930 and from then on based his work on his interpretations of biblical subjects. He used a hand-made paper shibugami for his work. The abstract image is of a seated kneeling figure resting their head on their hand with large floral roundels with leaves.
