A sizeable terracotta head of Bes, with bulging eyes, flat nose, thick beard, high cheek bones, exposed tongue and thick beard. Ptolemaic Period, 100-30 B.C. 5 inches high. Intact as shown. ex. Lauwers family collection, Belgium, collected before 1980. Bes was worshipped as a protector of households, of mothers and children and childbirth and later regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad.
