An ancient Egyptian group of eight sheet gold fragments. Probably from a piece of furniture. The top group depicts a cobra (1 1/8 inches high), a Ba Bird (1 1/4 inches high), a Horus (1 1/4 inches high) and a winged falcon (1 1/4 inches high). The bottom group depicts an Isis/Hathor holding a sceptre (1 7/8 inches high), a Neith (1 1/2 inches high), an Isis (1 1/4 inches high) and an Aegis with a falcon in the center (1 3/4 inches long). The human-headed falcon wearing a tri-partite wig with long lappets and the feet set apart on an integral rectangular base. Ptolemaic Period, 300-32 B.C. 5 1/2 inches high. Some wear with traces of gesso and polychrome. From the New York Estate of Stuart Bart. The Ba was portrayed as a human-headed bird, whose duty was to reunite the soul with the body. The Ba-bird was often shown hovering over the deceased's mummy or leaving or entering the tomb at will.
