At the top of the column the capital is divided by four parallel bars. Late Period, 600-300 B.C. 2 5/8 inches high. Intact. From a Pennsylvania private collection. The djed column was the Egyptian symbol of stability. It was thought to be the symbol of the tree that grew around Osiris's casket and was used as a pillar in a Byblos palace. The djed was considered necessary to aid in the transformation of human flesh into the spiritual form assumed by the deceased in eternity.

Depending on which aspect of its being was being emphasized, it was associated with various gods and appears in various myths.
