| Seated on its haunches on an integral base, with thick furry body, crowned with a solar-disk framed by cow horns, and an intact suspension loop on the reverse. Late period, 600-300 B.C. 1 1/8 inches or 2.8575 centimeters high. Small chip on rear base. From a California collection. The baboon was closely associated with the god of wisdom, science and measurement, Thoth. As Thoth's sacred animal, the baboon was often shown directing scribes in their task. As Thoth was a god of the moon, his baboons were often shown wearing the crescent moon on their head. | ||
