AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN AMULET OF A MONGOOSE
Rare amulet depicting a striding mongoose also known as the Ichneumon. Openwork, with well-defined facial details and with defined fur on top of his head. Late Period, 600-30 B.C. 1 3/8 inches long. Small chip on tail. Otherwise intact with intact suspension loop. From a California collection. The ichneumon has been a sacred animal in Egypt since the Middle Kingdom. Depending on which aspect of its being was being emphasized, it was associated with various gods and appears in various myths.
