Blue-green Egyptian amulet of the goddess Bastet, protector deity represented as a cat-headed goddess, she is holding a sistrum (a musical instrument like a rattle). Seated on a throne that is decorated with the depictions of a snake god (called Nehebkau). Open work between the legs and the throne, between the arms and body, between the head and sistrum and in the sistrum. Third Intermediate Period, 1070-664 B.C. From a North Carolina estate. One ear and suspension loop restored. The lioness Sekhmet and the cat Bastet were regarded as being the wild and tame aspects, respectively, of the same unpredictable goddess.
