| Large painted wood panel from a sarcophagus. Depicting the sky goddess Nut along with the four Sons of Horus, Nut is wearing the disc crown, with the head in profile and with pleasant facial expression, wearing an elaborate, tightly-fitted garment, wearing bracelets and armlets and depicted with two left hands. Late Period, 600-32 B.C. 41.5 inches high. Some age losses with extensive remains of original pigment. Ex. NYC collection. Nut was the goddess of the sky. Her name is translated to mean Night and she is considered one of the oldest deities among the Egyptian pantheon with her origins being found on the creation story of Heliopolis. She was the goddess of the daytime sky, but she eventually became referred to as simply the sky goddess. | ||
