BATAK PAINTED HIDE SHIELD

Completely untouched example C.1750-1800. 19 1/2" dia. pig skin body of shallow conical form with upturned edge and four elongated bosses covering the hand grip connections. Painted with the hair on, black with gold radial ornamentation enhanced with heavy red pigment or wax. Reverse painted black including the grip anchors. Woven rattan hand grips intact and excellent-even retains its woven shoulder cord. While it has been suggested that the use of pig skin was meant as an insult to Muslim raiders, it seems more likely that as the toughest material available, it was selected for its resiliency and protective qualities. Shows honest age and use throughout. The painted decoration somewhat worn, painted ground just about 100% intact. Only example we’ve ever offered. The Batak are racially, Malayo-Polynesian which is encompassed by the original definition of Polynesian but today, excluded by some scholars and a point of disagreement. Owing to their perishable construction and humid climactic conditions, surviving examples of oceanic shields are exceedingly rare.
