In siege warfare, attackers were disadvantaged by position and protective defenses. That necessitated increased bodily protection. As the amount of armor a man was capable of wearing was limited by its weight, the protection was concentrated in the vital areas, the helmet to protect the head and the breastplate to protect the vital organs. This breastplate provided that latter protection. It is especially finely made with thick forward rolled neck and arm borders and a medial ridge peaked above the flared waist. Internally, it is mounted with two iron shackles to accept pins similarly mounted to the backplate forming a mechanical joint. It was worn without tassets. The bottom flare bears a maker’s mark and circular control marks inside and out. Height: 14 1/2”
