SPANISH BILBO BROADSWORD C.1750

Classic example as served in Colonial America, the Caribbean and the Spanish Main. As illustrated in all the standard texts including Neumann 296.S and Spanish Military Weapons in Colonial America pl. 146-8 and the original regulation drawings, pl.145. Iron hilt with line edged double lobed bowl guard. Angled recurved cross guard and mushroom form pommel. Wire wrapped grip with four vertical bars. 35 1/8” d.e. blade with maker’s or arsenal mark of tongs to the reverse. Untouched condition with original blackened finish overall with scattered areas of old arrested rust growth beneath. Even retains its original red felt blade seat. Blade edge with few short forging lamination flaws, as typical for these, all contributing to the enormous character of this example. Equally suitable for Colonial American, Spanish Southwest or piracy collection.
