An impressive and marvelously chiseled bronze and multi-metal vase depicting a powerful dragon cavorting among clouds, executed in relief with shakudo, copper and gilt. The vase is startling in imagery, size and form. Silver-inlaid seal, Sougo Shimada. This dramatic bronze with the iconic Japanese dragon is in excellent condition. A shakudo, silver-lined covered box in octagonal form. On its lid, a marvelously modeled cockerel stands fast at the base of a heavily carved tree while his family forages for food nearby. The use of gold, shibuichi and red enamel, chiseled in minute detail and in high relief creates visual drama against its glossy shakudo ground. Includes wooden owner’s box. A Myochin-style iron box of rectangular form, a young stag contemplating maple leaves cascading over a dramatic waterfall, all with gilt detailing and in high relief. Bold modeling and chisel work heighten the drama of this poetic scene. The anonymous artist embellished the dark iron metal with precious gilt and silver. A Hirado porcelain okimono of a female shishi clambering upon the rocky edges of a precipice. Detailed in white, under- glaze blue and brown glazes, the imagery refers to the shishi mother’s resolute act of throwing her young, one-by-one, off a cliff in order to test their survival capabilities. An amusing stained boxwood netsuke of a mythical water sprite (kappa) in a predicament—his curiosity has trapped his foot inside a clam shell! The dominant imagery in this netsuke carving is steeped in erotic undertones—the clam shell often symbolic of female anatomy in Japanese art. An expressive boxwood mask netsuke of the celebrated, delightfully controversial Okame. The renowned netsuke-shi Shumin carved Okame’s famously cheerful face with delicate incisions for the hair, modeling of the cheeks, perky nose and warm smile. Shumin I signature incised on reverse side. This lovely netsuke is in excellent condition. (The netsuke artist Shumin I was from the Kansei region and a pupil of Shuzan or Shugetsu II.) A Hirado porcelain censer formed as a robust Buddhist lion. Fully sculpted in a white-glazed porcelain, its one-horned head is adorned with curly mane and beard the rotund body held by four powerful claws. A Hirado porcelain sculptural group of two seated canine parents, the mother with small pup naturalistically suckling at the mother’s breast. The fur coat on each dog is delicately incised, one hair at a time. This charming and rare Hirado group is in excellent condition with only slight wear to the bases commensurate with age and use. (This group is also featured in Alistair Seton’s “Collecting Japanese Antiques”, pg. 127, Fig. 225.) Heights: 14.5” and 12.5” Edo Period, Japan
