This unusual full-bodied Satsuma bowl rests on a square base, its brilliant exterior a surround of lively koi swimming in waters behind a gilt network rendered in relief. A naturalistically-carved netsuke of a conch shell sculpted out of wood. (The conch is often depicted with Benkei, the strongman of Japan, and with yamabushi (warrior-monks). This particular and large conch shell netsuke is rendered with deeply incised detailing and has a bold, undulating form. Excellent condition with neither faults nor restoration 19th Century, Japan

An elegant iron and gilt stepped chest on four bracketed feet and with two delicately reticulated clasps. Intricate damascene work of birds mid blossoming sakura, wild chrysanthemums, and bamboo decorate the lid and side panels. A distinctive lozenge-form, Satsuma koro, beautifully designed with groves of chrysanthemums on one side and peonies on the other, detailed in low relief gosu enamel, gilt and iron red. Delicate scrollwork decorates the shoulders, upon which rests a reticulated silver cover shaped as a chrysanthemum with moriage flowers along the border. An oval shakudo tsuba modeled with verticals stalks of bamboo. Each stalk, situated one against the other, forms the tsuba ground with five clusters of bamboo leaves, gilt and textured, strategically placed on its surface. An exquisite patinated bronze kogo of circular form worked in high relief with gold, copper and silver, the interiors of polished silver. A small shibuichi and gilt bird with upturned head perches on the leafy bough of a plum tree, lush peonies nearby. Flower petals in gilt and bronze are sprinkled along the sides.
