A lustrous studio porcelain bowl of globular form with the maker’s intriguing graduated delicate- taupe glaze. On the main area, an amusing salamander clings to its side. The long, coiled body supported by short legs. This whimsical piece by the renowned Imperial Court ceramicist, Makuzu Kozan, is in excellent condition. A small firing flaw on the salamander’s body. Underglaze blue signature cartouche on base. Height: 4”, width” 4” Meiji Period, Japan

An elegant high-shouldered, tapered ikebana basket in karamono-style. This fine basket is woven with intricately-cut and lacquered sooted bamboo strands in a mat weave. Its Insect stitch- work runs vertically along the body, pedestal base and triple-banded handle. The shoulders are beautifully decorated with a herringbone-patterned band. A fine, stained boxwood manju netsuke formed as three monkeys in fetal position, each clasping the other’s hand. The focus of the netsuke-shi’ attention lies with the sculpting of the bodies with minimum detailing. This netsuke is in excellent condition with nice patina. Provenance: Ex. The netsuke carver, paying strict attention to detail, etched lines on the egg to denote the mythic creature’s efforts. This charming netsuke is in very good condition, with no problems. Known for his naturalistic representations of toads, Masanao captures this one’s characteristic nuances, contrasting them with the striated surface of the stone. A boxwood amusing netsuke of a seated boy with legs neatly folded. Playing bekkanko, a suggestive game, the boy pulls down one eye, while hiding an oni mask behind his back. A pair of covered Imari porcelain jars, each finial formed as a mouse on a bale of rice. Charming, naïve-looking doves perch upon the boughs of a blossoming sakura tree, their heads turned and tail feathers ruffled. To complete the idyllic scene, butterflies flit above peonies and tall grasses. A round Satsuma shallow bowl with geometric border framing the main visual- a suspenseful activity in a wintry pine forest. In Heian Period- style clothes, a mother and two sons hide among the snow-covered trees where, across the river, samurai with bows and arrows hunt for them.
