A stained boxwood katabori netsuke sculpted as a Sambaso dancer. The dancer wears characteristic high hat and formal attire. He is caught in mid-dance, one foot in the air with arms bent back and head turned upwards. (Sambaso dance originated in the 9th century as a religious dance. This is an exquisite tripodic cloisonné koro in the shape of an ancient Chinese bronze vessel with two upturned handles and pierced cover. The body is decorated with kiku and wisteria surrounding a pond laden with ducks swimming in a glistening, black enamel ground. The koro is executed with very fine wire work and is in excellent condition with no chips, dents or restoration. Height: 6.5", diameter: 6.25" Meiji Period, Japan

A pair of pure silver sculpted okimono of a cockerel and his mate, the hen, naturalistically rendered with gold accents. Emphasis is made on the dramatic tail feathers of the cockerel, as he courts the female. Texturing, cold-chiseled and incised details add to the lively display. A mottled bronze vase of globular form with an impactful moriage rendering of a lone lobster with inlaid shakudo eyes upon its surface. The sea creature is naturalistically detailed and spans the width of the exterior. On the interior of the vase, a removable otoshi serves as a vessel for flower arrangement. A four-case gold-lacquered inro depicting the great Heian Period poet, Prince Narihira, and his courtier on horseback. On the reverse, a horseman and attendant race over mountains and streams to overtake them. Detailing in takamaki-e, togidashi and kirikane on polished kinji ground.
