An oval, black-lacquered wooden plaque decorated with carved boxwood masks of the 16 Rakans (attendants to Buddha), gold-lacquered descriptions on the sides. Each face is carved with great detail and expression as seen in typical depictions of these religious ascetics. A black-lacquered kobako of rectangular form containing four smaller boxes and tray with handle. Decorated Somada-style with inlaid aogai and gold foil, a patrician lady seated elegantly within a boat views a fisherman close by. River plants float on the waters and a swaying willow bows overhead. The interiors of the boxes are lacquered with dense nashiji, the outside borders with random flower heads. A rare, heavy-barrelled matchlock gun deeply damascened in gold and silver and mounted with front and rear sights. Its iron, octagonal barrel rests on a wood stock with Watanabe and Tokugawa mons, the spring and match holder deeply engraved with silver scrollwork. The cannon’s muzzle is richly inlaid with gold and silver floral scrollwork and dragons writhing among curling clouds. A charming carved- wood okimono in the form of a barrel filled with koi. Bent over its lid, a karako (Chinese boy) is intent upon extracting a carp from the interior, the latter inlaid with mother-of-pearl. This unusual carving boasts extensive and intricate detailing on the karako’s robes and on the drum slung upon his back. The cover opens to reveal a compartment for storage. This imaginative box in the style of an okimono is in excellent condition. Height: 8” Meiji Period, Japan

An elegantly assembled kagamibuta of lacquered rosewood, its champlevé cover designed with peonies and leafy scrollwork with pink and green enamels. The kagamibuta hangs from a black silk, braided tassel. Good example of the early cloisonné technique on netsuke. Overall condition is very good with minor loss to the enamel commensurate with age and use. 18th/19th Century, Edo Period, Japan
