An elegant, ovoid-shaped Satsuma vase rendered with panels of blue birds perched on branches of wisteria, multi-colored lilies entwined on a bamboo fence nearby. These idyllic scenes alternate with images of daily life in Japan—a lady purchasing daikon (radishes) from a vendor and samurai having tea with his attendants. Here is an exquisite example of Nabeshima porcelain produced for the warrior Nabeshima clan. As seen on this footed plate, great technical control of the celadon glaze is evident as it drapes against the background in a soft sea-green color. With its characteristically long nose, this mythical creature famed for its swordsmanship skills has piercing reticulated eyes and carved teeth and tongue. This is a good-sized tripodic cloisonné covered bowl of hexagonal form with rounded finial. The faceted body is brilliantly brocaded on the cover and six ogee-shaped cartouches on each of its sides are finely wired with alternating images of ho-o birds and dragons in an extraordinary array of multi-colored enamels. This is a beautifully formed, four-lobed Satsuma koro with a silver and sentoku lid carved overall with kiku in relief on a textured ground. The earthenware body is composed of four pronounced lobes gently tapering to form its four elegant legs.
