A wood netsuke sculpted as a shishi playing with a tama. Bearing its sharp teeth, flared nose and muscular body, the shishi seems intimidating at first. However, its upturned bushy tail and glittering inlaid eyes confirm this mythical animal’s intent—play ball! This netsuke is in very good condition. An excellent pair of gilt menuki formed as prancing horses. Menuki form part of a Japanese samurai sword's overall koshirae (mounts), and are placed under or over the tsuka (handle) wrap to provide additional friction and grip. Converted to pins, the pair of menuki pins are worked in high relief with finely incised details. Special attention is devoted to the fluidity of the mane and tail, each carefully defined. An attractive Imari porcelain plate formed as a clam shell with scalloped edge. Its border is decorated with alternating floral and textile patterns in iron red and blue enamel with gilt detailing. On its pristine white surface a grove of chrysanthemum flowers on their leafy stems appear windswept.
