On its cover, in high relief, a coiled three-footed Japanese sea dragon surges among swelling waves, the classic imagery continuing on all four sides. This elegant Satsuma ewer with exquisite brocading and handle and spout formed as bamboo is enameled with a continuous scene of the popular Japanese art theme, "Three Friends of Winter". Designed asymmetrically in multi-colored enamels with spiraling gosu blue streams, bamboo and salmon-hued and white -enamel kiku in relief bloom along a gnarled plum blossom tree. A large bronze baluster vase with archaic-shaped legs and handles. Executed in gold, silver, shibuichi and copper, its central visual is defined by kaga-inlaid lappets at neck and feet. Upon the body, a regal egret, kaga-inlaid in silver rests upon a snow laden branch sculpt in shakudo and surrounded by sprays of silvery, snowy reeds. A rare, unusually-modelled sentoku suiteki, similar to a box, a marvelously wrought mokko-formed tsuba its lid. Formed as a suiteki (water dropper for calligraphy), delicate sprays of leafy vines in low relief cover its nanako ground. This rare metalwork piece is in very good condition with only minor wear to the base, commensurate with age and use. Length: 3.5” Meiji Period, Japan

Gently delineated grooves on the rich surface add to the naturalism of this netsuke, a great study by the netsuke artist Bokuzan, his signature plaque on its side. An excellent iron tsuba of free form with a striking image of Emma-O, the king of hell, clutching his magisterial robe and wearing his characteristic two-tiered hat, a small demon crouching at his side. On the reverse, a sign attached to gold ropes features a lively tai heavily detailed in gold and shibuichi. A dramatically carved stained boxwood netsuke of an emaciated wolf holding a tortoise between its paws. With a ferocious expression and inlaid eyes, the wolf sits on its hind legs with tail tucked between its legs. Masatomo incised signature on the tail.
