A boxwood netsuke carved in the round as a mythological shishi hatching from an egg, its surface cracked for added effect. Comically, the shishi pokes its head and fronts paws from one end and hind legs and bushy tail from the other. Its alert inlaid eyes reflect the newborn’s curiosity. This lovely netsuke is in excellent condition. Carved signature, Arikawa or Arikado on base. 19th Century, Japan

A tall, elegant Satsuma vase of tapered form, pleated body and inverted rim worked in the style of early Satsuma earthenware utilizing gosu blue and deep red enameling with gilt details. On its body, tall branches of kiku, buds and leaves rising from roiling gosu waves accentuate its shape. Rich textile banners of gosu blue and gilt embrace the neck and foot. A large and major studio pottery vase of ovoid form, its base ornately rendered with textile-patterned lappets in gilt, gosu, iron red and green enamels. On the splendid brown-glazed ground, lush white sakura grow asymmetrically across its surface in delicate clusters. A whimsical wooden netsuke rendered as a wasp feeding on an ingeniously-sculpted rotting pear, its skin defined by ukibori stippling. The creature, naturalistically carved, possesses incised details and jet-inlaid eyes, the signature of the known Nagoya School maker, Sangetsu, incised on its base.( For a similar piece see: Lazarnick, MCI, page 691.) A delightful solid bronze okimono of a parent tortoise with two youngsters clambering on her back. The life-like realism achieved by the artist’s fine chiseling and texturing make this piece special. In addition, the tortoises have double-inlaid shakudo and gilt eyes. Incised signature on nether side of metallurgist Shobi Eisuke; includes tomobako. An exquisite Imari porcelain bowl with slightly flared rim and double- ring base. Encircling the exterior is a diamond-patterned band and fan-shaped cartouches with groves of kiku and butterflies alternating with stylized gilt phoenix. A similar band of alternating phoenix and fan-cartouches decorates the inner walls of the bowl, its hexagonal center a rondel with two shishi on a bed of stylized chrysanthemums. A large four-paneled Hirado porcelain baluster vase with demon-head handles at the shoulder. Heavily carved lappets at foot and neck accentuate the varied treatments evident in the panels. This is an exquisite tripodic cloisonné koro in the shape of an ancient Chinese bronze vessel with two upturned handles and pierced cover. The body is decorated with kiku and wisteria surrounding a pond laden with ducks swimming in a glistening, black enamel ground. A yellow-bronze incense burner on three splayed feet, its silver-lined lid surmounted by a brilliantly-sculpted silver kiku. The cover of this splendid censer is decorated with reticulated and kaga-inlaid butterflies in dazzling metals. An impressive Imari porcelain jardinière of massive proportions decorated with under- glaze blue lappets around the foot and multi-colored rondels along the shoulders. Its main visuals are composed of alternating blue and iron- red ogee-shaped cartouches with images of phoenix among flowering trees and a pavilion surrounded by baskets of peonies in a fenced garden.
