A complete kiseru zutsu set with bamboo pipe case richly woven in herring bone pattern and adorned with dancing figures of Daikoku and Ebisu, their ivory faces highlit by lacquered costumes and attributes-in-hand. A stained boxwood netsuke of a recumbent goat with jet-inlaid eyes and pensive mien. This splendid creature, its fur deeply undercut and horns finely textured, lies with his legs tucked neatly beneath him. For such a small being, he is given tremendous presence by the famed artist. This charming netsuke is in excellent condition. Rakumin incised signature on nether side. Height: 1”, length: 1.5” 19th Century, Japan

A rare Satsuma vase uniquely sculpted as a lotus flower. Each petal is in the round and painted with an abstract floral design in iron red, gosu blue and gilt. Lappets of the same design along the foot and neck reinforce the floral design. This unusual Satsuma piece is in very good condition with only minor age rubbing to the gilt. Gilt Keido signature and Shimazu mon (Satsuma province crest) can be found on the base. Height: 15” 19th Century, Japan

A small, fan-shaped Satsuma kogo, its lid an arrangement of women and children engaged in various arts and crafts. Within, a lone sparrow rests upon a leafy maple branch. The luxuriant borders complement the simplicity of the renderings. Yabu Meizan’s gilt signature cartouche on base. (Yabu Meizan (1853-1934) is one the greatest Satsuma artist of the Meiji Period. A rare Imari porcelain plate of ogee-form with a sculpted, scalloped surface. On its pristine white vitreous ground, leafy scrollwork in under glaze blue and salmon-hued enamels is superimposed by kiku-rondels in alternating shades of iron red and cobalt, gilt details throughout. This attractive Imari plate is in very good condition with minimal surface wear to the gilt due to age and use. Height: 12.5”, width: 11” Meiji Period, Japan

A classic gold and black lacquered five-case inro desiged in gold and silver hiramaki-e. Three wild horses graze under a gnarled pine tree against a background of rich, sprinkled gold. Interiors are dense nashiji. The inro is complete with ivory ojime and netsuke also carved in ivory of a group of five horses. Kajakawa signature seal in red lacquer on the base. A wonderful tripodic censer shaped in the style of ancient Chinese bronzes often used for religious ceremonies. On its three legs, a round modeled body gives way to a wide everted lip. The luminous celadon glaze in a soft sea-green color covers the exterior and interior of the censer and is characteristic of the work of this artist. Greek fret details on shoulder plate and belt carefully carved, the robes with gold-lacquered rondels of stylized dragons, ho-o birds and butterflies.
