A charming carved- wood okimono in the form of a barrel filled with koi. Bent over its lid, a karako (Chinese boy) is intent upon extracting a carp from the interior, the latter inlaid with mother-of-pearl. This unusual carving boasts extensive and intricate detailing on the karako’s robes and on the drum slung upon his back. The cover opens to reveal a compartment for storage. This imaginative box in the style of an okimono is in excellent condition. Height: 8” Meiji Period, Japan

A round iron tsuba with beaded rim in the Namban style. Two dragons overlaid in gold nunome zogan rest among reticulated tendrils, a gilt tama between them. The seppa area is finely carved with overlapping waves. ( For a similar piece see: “The Peabody Museum Collection of Japanese Sword Guards” by John D. Hamilton, Salem, MA 1975, page XXVII, #6.) This classic tsuba is in good condition with mild rubbing to the surface, commensurate with age and use. Width: 3” Late 18th Century, Japan

A dramatic silver and cloisonné pedestal vase with slim neck and lobed body. Luxuriant peonies in rich enamels encircle the vase in high relief, contrasting with the delicate enamel work at the neck and foot. Peonies, symbols of spring season, are venerated flowers in Chinese and Japanese art, often associated with good fortune and erotic love. This is a boxwood okimono formed as a toad. The small sculpture exhibits extensive carving with careful attention to the toad's musculature and inlaid-horn eyes. A marvelously sculpted bronze daisho set of menuki formed as a Chinese noble matron holding an uchiwa, together with a young attendant with a basket of peaches. The mate to this menuki, modeled as a man with long beard, presents an offering of peaches. Both parts of the set – noble lady and bearded companion – are accented in precious silver and gold. An elegant, elongated porcelain vase with ring collar and skirted base. Upon its enameled surface, creamy chrysanthemums rise on their tall, leafy stalks toward the rim of the vase, their stems fading into the saturated iron red ground.
