An unusual Satsuma moon flask with pyramidal base by the renowned artist, Yabu Meizan. Characteristic lakeside scenes and sparrows perched among blossoming peony branches are painted with fine detail and jewel-tones are enameled on each rondel. Along the sides and the base, a multitude of butterflies flutter about exquisitely rendered floral wreaths and white iris rising from a stylized stream. A pair of menuki cast in relief with elaborate use of shakudo, gilt and silver; one, formed as a kabuto and gunbai (war fan), the other a bow with arrows and quiver. This set of menuki is exquisitely incised, textured and chiseled to achieve the appearance of the actual objects. The menuki are in excellent condition with no dents, loss or restoration. This is a full-bodied studio porcelain bowl with wide rim and everted lip. On its slightly lobed body, eight cartouches depict Sennin in soft underglaze blue enamel surrounded by iron red and blue auspicious clouds. Each Sennin displays a specific attribute, such as the uchiwa, flower basket, double gourd and hand scroll. (Sennin were Chinese in origin, but their legend and iconography became revered in Japan.) A tall and elegant Hirado porcelain vase of cylindrical form rendered with a serene landscape in under- glaze blue enamel on a characteristic soft white ground. Gently rolling hills are the backdrop to a lakeside scene of sailboats and flock of birds-in-flight over placid waters, a cluster of thatched roof-top huts nearby. A classic gold and black lacquered five-case inro desiged in gold and silver hiramaki-e. Three wild horses graze under a gnarled pine tree against a background of rich, sprinkled gold. Interiors are dense nashiji. The inro is complete with ivory ojime and netsuke also carved in ivory of a group of five horses. Kajakawa signature seal in red lacquer on the base. This is a shallow Imari porcelain bowl formed as a sakura, predominately executed in various shades of iron red and Mohammedan blue. Three elaborate medallions of kiku-form with gilt scrollwork divide the dramatic visual of ho-o and paulownia vines and leaves. The central rondel depicts an ikebana arrangement of sakura and peony. This wonderful Imari piece is in very good condition with the slight wear to the gilt and minimal flaking of the green-enameled leaves due to age and use. Len ...click for details

A striking Kutani stoneware okimono fully sculpted as a seated Buddhist temple guardian. Posed with head slightly turned, bare teeth and front legs firmly placed, its tufted, golden chest contrasts with the glistening emerald- green glaze of his body.
