A heartwarming okimono carved of stained boxwood. Rendered in energetic strokes, the sculpture depicts a karako (Chinese boy) assisting a sage as he struggles for balance with the aid of his walking staff. The wise man wraps his arms around the attentive young boy, the imagery highlighting the honored Asian tradition of filial piety. Incised signature of Hatitsu on the base. This boxwood okimono is in very good condition. Height: 4.25” Meiji Period, Japan

A spectacular bronze and multi-metal vase of ovoid form segmented by golden bands. Partially concealed by large, gold-speckled leaves, maturing foliage and newly-ripened golden berries, a realistically-rendered silver cicada signals autumn’s arrival. This vase is in excellent condition. Incised signature, Yoshiyuki koku. Gold seal, Kokubi-do. Height, 11.5"; width, 10". Meiji Period.

A naturalistically carved wood netsuke sculpted as a toad astride an overturned bucket. This classic netsuke theme was popular among the netsuke carvers, especially favored by the famous Masanao school. In addition, the theme is inspired by the Basho proverb, “A frog in a well knows not the great sea”, describing a person of limited experience.
