An exquisite ikebana basket of bottle-form constructed of honey-colored bamboo strands woven with dense mat plaiting. Thin strands of bamboo rise from the kiku-woven base, bending miraculously at the shoulders and twining along the collar and throughout the full body. This superb ikebana basket is signed by the bamboo master Tanabe Chikuunsai II (1910-2000), whose work is recognizable by its delicate lacquering and innovative weaving. This is a charming pendant bamboo basket for ikebana display of seasonal flowers, its small loop handle for hanging on the side. Bamboo strips, slightly lacquered and bent, use the twining technique to form the base and the rim. A large Chinese cloisonné covered box formed as a cart drawn by a powerful ox. In opulent, baroque-style, its opaque enamels in iron red, pink, black and white are contained by heavily gilt wires with stylized decorations embedded in its turquoise-enameled ground. Rich in symbolism, archaic dragons, phoenix, lotus and jeweled necklaces cover the entire piece. A pair of fine glass and silver decanters of conical form with pierced silver stylized bamboo stalks and leaves embracing its surface. The silver stoppers capture the art deco-inspired conical shape of the vessels. The bases and stoppers are marked "Sterling 950." ( Japanese silver is 950 in silver content, higher than the British sterling.) These decanters are in excellent condition with no dents or damage. Height (both): 12" Late Taisho/Showa Period, Japan

This is a lovely silver and multi-metal kogo formed as a recumbent crane, its neck snuggled in its plumage. The crane's shibuichi body is delicately modeled in low relief with shakudo tail and textured gilt crest, the silver interiors finely polished. Incised characters and two cartouches on its base read: "Gift for wedding of Takeko". An unusual oval-shaped basket made of natural and leached bamboo with reed handle held in place by intricate wraps and elaborate cicada knots. The basket's robust body is worked with modified hexagonal plaiting, its vertical inserts of leeched bamboo creating a beautiful openwork pattern.
