This charming globular-shaped porcelain vase is worked predominantly in underglaze blue and various pastel-hued enamels with gilt detailing on its white ground. Here is a wonderfully executed ikebana basket on a square base, its intricately wrapped handle attached to a wide openwork gallery. The body is woven with fine strands of bamboo utilizing various plaiting techniques, its form reminiscent of usubata bronzes. Here is an extraordinary ikebana basket by bamboo master Suemura Shobun of Osaka (1917-2000). Using his signature style of finely treated bamboo and refined simplicity, this hanging basket of double-gourd form is worked in a mat plaiting technique, the looped handle secured with shrimp stitching and woven to the body. This is an extraordinary bamboo basket of rare form with tall, looped handle and intricate design. Constructed of fine strips of bamboo woven in open work and twined plating, its forked handle is wrapped securely to the body with interlocking v-knots and butterfly knots. This lovely ikebana basket with unusual narrow waist and flared neck is woven with an overall design. On four pod feet and topped with an arched double reed handle with symmetrical insect stitching, its lightly -colored bamboo slats worked in a swirling design connote moving water, the effect resulting from tight plaiting left to right. A fine cloisonné vase of baluster form with two lotus-formed handles executed in moriage. A grayish-blue enameled ground serves as the backdrop for a brilliant ho-o bird-in-flight, its body wired with a myriad of jewel-like, colored enamels. Stylized flowers and foliage rise from the foot. This silver-mounted vase has the great Hayashi Tanigoro silver-wired signature mark on the base.
