This charming globular-shaped porcelain vase is worked predominantly in underglaze blue and various pastel-hued enamels with gilt detailing on its white ground. In the Chinese style, figures are depicted as they engage in various pursuits - ikebana arrangement, tea ceremony and incense burning. An overlapping bi-form tebako (cosmetic box) designed in hiramaki-e and togadashi. Autumnal imagery with mountains, streams, maple, pine and luxurious foliage adorns the exterior and sides, dense nashiji the interior and underside. Silver mounts and tomobako. Provenance: Signed on tomobako lid: "Gift by Empress at Hayama Goyotei (summer house), Taisho 6, March 3, 1918." This gold maki-e tebako is in good condition. A tall ikebana bamboo basket composed of fine strands of lacquered bamboo woven in a pine needle plaiting. Its broad gallery with slim, vertical stands of bamboo evenly placed, rises from the closely woven body. Twining details and insect stitching along the rim and wrapped along the low reed handle secure the rim and handle in place. A tall, elegant silver coffee pot with hinged lid, the finial sculpted with bamboo leaves and culm. The bamboo motif continues along the stippled body with stalks of bamboo modeled in low relief, dramatic leaves sprouting from its stem. An archaic-shaped bamboo basket with flared neck and "dragon" formed handles of twisted bamboo rope on three bamboo- stalk feet. Embellished with large bundled bamboo knots, the basket's body is woven in alternating twining and herring- bone plaiting with rich mat- plaiting along the neck. Here is an extraordinary sentoku tsuba of large circular form, its ground carved and textured. Celebrating the revered position of the fish in Japan's culture, a marvelous copper and shakudo sea bream (tai) is segmented and carved meticulously in high relief on its front surface. This lovely ikebana basket with unusual narrow waist and flared neck is woven with an overall design. On four pod feet and topped with an arched double reed handle with symmetrical insect stitching, its lightly -colored bamboo slats worked in a swirling design connote moving water, the effect resulting from tight plaiting left to right. This is a beautiful and charming ikebana basket entitled "Chidori," or plover, made of natural, old bamboo in an open-work hexagonal weave.
