A tall ikebana bamboo basket composed of fine strands of lacquered bamboo woven in a pine needle plaiting. Its broad gallery with slim, vertical stands of bamboo evenly placed, rises from the closely woven body. Twining details and insect stitching along the rim and wrapped along the low reed handle secure the rim and handle in place. A large ikebana basket in the style of ancient bronze vessels, the handles elaborately designed. Narrow strips of bamboo, lozenge - plaited, create open work on the body, segmenting it by two bands of twined bamboo. The sculptural form and workmanship of this basket immediately identify the maker, Rokansai, who refined karamono-style and raised basketry to an artform. Tomobako. Height, 13.5". A stained wood netsuke carved as a recumbent goat, its regal head turned skyward. This classic pose is expertly rendered with deeply striated layers of the creature’s fur and undercut horns. In Japanese art, the sheep and the goat are often interchangeable. Most notably, the goat/sheep is associated with legendary characters such as the Taoist Sennin. A superb hanging bamboo ikebana basket of lobed, oval form carefully woven in herringbone design with vertical inserts, its rim intricately braided. A braided silk cord is attached to the body with metal clasps formed as plum blossoms. This ikebana basket is in very good condition with only few signs of wear commensurate with age.
