An archaic-shaped bamboo basket with flared neck and "dragon" formed handles of twisted bamboo rope on three bamboo- stalk feet. Embellished with large bundled bamboo knots, the basket's body is woven in alternating twining and herring- bone plaiting with rich mat- plaiting along the neck. This extraordinary, wagumi-style ikebana basket is in very good condition. Height: 13" Meiji/Taisho Period, Japan

This is a charming pendant bamboo basket for ikebana display of seasonal flowers, its small loop handle for hanging on the side. Bamboo strips, slightly lacquered and bent, use the twining technique to form the base and the rim. An exquisite ikebana basket of bottle-form constructed of honey-colored bamboo strands woven with dense mat plaiting. Thin strands of bamboo rise from the kiku-woven base, bending miraculously at the shoulders and twining along the collar and throughout the full body. A Japanese silver okimono of Daikoku, one of the Seven Gods of Good Luck, seated on two bales of rice with his magic mallet in hand and treasure sack over his back. The god of prosperity is carefully chiseled to denote his noble yet benign appearance. Daikoku is in excellent condition with no damage. The subject of Japanese peasants cultivating rice in the fields, an every-day activity, treated in this screen with poetic romanticism. Takeuchi Meiho ink signature and seal. Here is an unusual vase of modified meiping form. The vase is crafted in a soft color -gradation from dark grey to white. The nocturnal backdrop highlights the whiteness and translucent quality of plum blossoms as they shiver in the air.
