| A partly pierced oval shakudo and soft metal tsuba with gilt detailing depicting the legend of Shiba Onko. The imagery captures the moment when a karako, drowning in an oversized pot is rescued by his friend - who breaks the pot. (Based on a 11th Century Chinese story.) The extensive carving, chiseling - and the asymetrical positioning of the figures and the almost human pine trees - creates a lively scene, the multitude of gaping figures gesticulating in awe and amazement. This fabulous tsuba is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration. Edo Period, Japan | |||||||
