Japanese Imari Namban-Style Charger
A large Imari porcelain charger in the Namban-style with Dutch figures dressed in characteristic garb, their faces descriptive of the Japanese conception of Gaijin. The figures alternate with Black Ship cartouches on a diamond-patterned ground, the central rondel with two Black Ship figures firing off a canon, the gilding adding to the richness expected of this ware. On the reverse, peony scrollwork, rondels of namban figures, Black Ships and kanji good fortune character mark. This gorgeous charger is in excellent condition. Diameter: 14.25" Early 20th Century (Taisho Period), Japan
